Artificial Intelligence: The future is here

With many of Amphigean’s customers integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into their products and services, we thought it would be useful to provide an introduction to a technological phenomenon that is taking the world by storm.

Artificial Intelligence is technology that enables machines to think or act in a more ‘human’ way. It does this by taking in information from its surroundings and deciding its response based on what it learns or senses. AI is therefore based on the development of computer functions associated with human intelligence, such as reasoning, learning, and problem solving. As they become more sophisticated, machines are improving their ability to learn from mistakes and change how they approach a task the next time they attempt it.

AI is different from hardware-driven, robotic automation. Instead of automating manual tasks, AI performs frequent, high-volume computerised tasks reliably and without fatigue. It adapts through learning algorithms, finding structure and regularities in data and allowing it to do the programming.

The lines between the physical and digital worlds are becoming ever more blurred, and AI is powering our lives in ways we perhaps no longer notice, from search engines and online shopping, to video games and smart meters. Companies are now able to absorb data from a huge variety of sources, and analyse them rapidly. These findings can be used to streamline production, customer service, and even recruitment.

Personal assistants like Alexa or Siri rely on AI through speech recognition software, while entertainment services like Netflix use the technology to understand what we like to watch and recommend other shows based on what they learn.

All global industries will need to embrace AI and by 2030 it is estimated that 70% of companies will be using it, potentially bringing in $13 trillion to the world economy. The jobs market is likely to drastically change too, with new roles created and others falling away through automation.

At Amphigean we have produced a series of techlites on Artificial Intelligence. Techlites are short animated videos that are designed to simplify complex themes, while being engaging and informative too. We have also created techlites on other themes such as the Internet of Things, mobile technology and 5G. If you’re interested, please contact Lauren Tullett at enquiries@amphigean.com

“I never cease to be amazed at the pace of technology adoption and AI is a great example of this. For a number of years now AI has been incorporated into many of the everyday services we all consume and the next decade is going to see a significant step-change in its use. That’s very exciting for designers, manufacturers, consumers of products and services, as well as companies like ours that are responsible for educating industry personnel so that they can realise the benefits of AI.”
