Riding high in Grizedale Forest

Amphigean’s recent team event saw us visit the Grizedale Forest, where we hired some mountain bikes and headed into the unknown.

These quarterly outings are chosen by a different team member each time, with few restrictions on the type of activity in question.

They invariably pose a challenge to get us out of our sedate office lives, and Cumbria offers a perfect setting to explore.

Previous activities have included hiking, clay-pigeon shooting, curling/bowling, pottery making and even escape rooms!

We chose the Hawkshead Moor Green trail for our route through Grizedale Forest, which was undulating to say the least.

One minute we were careering downhill at Olympian speeds attempting to stay on the path, the next we were facing a steep incline, desperately trying to change down the gears as we laboured.

Thankfully the final three miles were a long and thrilling descent, ending our adventure in high-octane style.

The weather was kind to us on the day and our lunch spot afforded a lovely view out on to Coniston Water and the Langdales.

With its pristine trails, Grizedale Forest itself seems tailor made for cycling and walking, and other highlights include the GO APE tree top obstacle course, a children’s play area, and a wide collection of permanent artworks.

Afterwards, everyone said how much they’d enjoyed the ride, even those who were worried at first.

It was a perfect way for the amphigean team to have some social time together while taking advantage of Cumbria’s unrivalled landscapes.
